School Culture

Together We Thrive

At Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy, we believe that every child thrives in a community built on respect, belonging, and joy. Our school culture celebrates diversity, nurtures curiosity, and encourages students to express themselves while caring for others. Through shared traditions, collaborative learning, and everyday acts of kindness, we create an environment where students feel safe, valued, and inspired to make a difference. Here are some of the ways we achieve this:

An Inclusive School

Inclusion means our school is for everyone. There are more formal definitions related to children with special needs, but culturally it means we welcome and celebrate all of our differences as people and families.

Four B’s

They’re our guiding principles for expected student behavior:

  • Be a Respectful Learner
  • Be a Responsible Learner
  • Be a Safe Learner
  • Be a Joyful Leaner

Definite Dozen

  • Respect Yourself and Others

  • Discipline Yourself So No One Else Has To
  • Make Hard Work Your Passion
  • Don’t Just Work Hard, Work Smart
  • Put the Team Before Yourself
  • Make Winning an Attitude
  • Be a Competitor
  • Change Is a Must
  • Handle Success Like You Handle Failure

Morning Circle

Morning Circle is a time when the school community meets and celebrates as a school. Parents and families are always welcome! It is held once a month. After Morning Circle, all the kids line up with their teacher and go to their classrooms.
