We love celebrating the incredible staff who make Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy such a special place! We’re shining a spotlight on Coach Glenn, who brings passion, creativity, and care to our community every day.
For nearly three decades, Coach Glenn, our Student Advisor, has been at the heart of Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy. When Harvey Milk was threatened with closure in 2024, we campaigned for testimonials about why Harvey Milk was so special, and it was Coach Glenn who was consistently mentioned. When the district was looking to eliminate his position, alumni and parents came to the Board of Education meeting to speak on his behalf. Coach Glenn’s programs, his values, and his presence have touched countless students. We asked Coach to share his story in his own words.

Q&A with Coach Glenn
What inspired you to become an educator?
I wanted to give kids the kind of guidance I was lucky to have. Growing up in the Bay Area with four siblings, raised by a single mom, I learned sacrifice, hard work, love for family, and faith. Those lessons stuck with me. Pair that with my core value of Inafa’maolek—“to make good for self, community, and the environment”—and education became the path where I could pass those values forward.
What are some programs you’ve brought to Harvey Milk?
I’ve always tried to give students tools they can carry for life. Over the years, I’ve:
- Martial Arts (Shotokan): 20+ years teaching stress reduction, confidence, focus, and discipline.
- Ukulele and Storytelling: Building culture and community through music.
- First Pass Program: A pilot program teaching concentration, rhythm, balance, flexibility, attitude, and instinct—values kids can use everywhere.
- Restorative Practices: Helping students build empathy, resolve conflicts, and strengthen relationships.

What makes Harvey Milk special for you?
It’s the culture of love and acceptance. My values align with the school’s mission. Harvey Milk is a place where kids can be their true selves, and that’s why, after 28 years, I still come to work with the same energy and passion. This school is my home.
How can families support this work?
My position isn’t funded by the district—it’s funded by our community. Every donation makes it possible for me to continue this work with students, now and in the future. Your support means everything.
