Ms. Reynolds: A Heart for Community and Belonging

Ms. Reynolds

Ms. Reynolds has been a beloved member of the Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy community for 16 years, bringing dedication, warmth, and a deep sense of connection to her work. As a 2nd/3rd teacher, parent, and active leader beyond the classroom, she helps foster the inclusive, caring environment that makes HMCRA so special. She describes the school as a “little hidden gem” and a “bubble of love,” where every child is seen, heard, and celebrated for who they are.

Q&A with Ms. Reynolds

You’ve been part of the HMCRA community for many years—how did your journey here begin, and what has kept you rooted at the school?

I have been at Harvey Milk for 16 years. I started as a Student Teacher, as I was getting my teaching credential at SF State. After 1.5 years in the program and working at Milk, I graduated and worked as a substitute around San Francisco and Oakland. A long-term substitute position became available at Harvey Milk in November that year, and I took it without hesitation. After that, the teacher was unable to return to teach—I officially took over the class, and I have been here ever since! Harvey Milk and Room 207 might have changed a lot over the years, but I have always been here in this classroom. I love this school. It has become my home and my community. Now my daughter is a Kindergartner here.

In addition to teaching, how do you support the HMCRA community through other roles or programs?

I have worn many hats over the years. My main hat outside of teaching is running the Rainbow Club once a month with Ms. Sarah. I am also the LGBTQ liaison and health liaison.

Students in the library hold of hand-drawn posters in front of their faces to promote "No Name Calling Week."

What makes HMCRA such a special place for you?

I love this school so much. It is a little hidden gem. The staff has become my family. We are a little bubble of love here. I have never seen a school like ours. Children feel heard and accepted for who they are. I wish I could have been brought up in a school full of so much love and understanding. I am also so lucky to work in the beautiful and historical Castro District. I am proud to have my children come and learn how to be accepting and loving human beings.
