Q&A with Ms. Vee

What has your journey at Harvey Milk been like?

I first came to Harvey Milk in 2018 as a student teacher in Ms. Kirman’s 4th/5th grade class while getting my master’s and teaching credential at USF. After that, I long-term subbed in a 4th/5th grade class here and quickly fell in love with this small but special school. I continued teaching in SFUSD, but always hoped to come back to Harvey Milk. After the pandemic, I returned to teach kindergarten, but that position was unfortunately consolidated. When I was asked to come back this year to teach 2nd/3rd, I didn’t hesitate. I had really missed the community, and I’m so happy to be back! I’ve been in quite a few roles and classrooms at Harvey Milk, but my love for this community hasn’t wavered; it’s only grown.

What role do you play in supporting teaching and learning at HMCRA?

I’m part of our Instructional Leadership Team, where we look at student data and think about best practices to make sure learning is accessible for all of our students. I’m always trying to grow as a teacher, and one of the best ways I do that is by learning from other educators and seeing what’s working in their classrooms. I’m constantly inspired by my colleagues and feel really grateful to be part of such a strong and dedicated team!

What makes HMCRA such a meaningful place for you to teach?

I love that this school truly stands behind advocating for civil rights and taking action against injustice. It’s something I feel in everything we do from classroom discussions to service projects to the diversity in our curricula. I’m so proud to be part of a school that values using our voices to stand up for what’s right. The families, staff, students, and neighborhood are always supportive. It really feels like the place I’m meant to be teaching.
